Getting Wairarapa ready for faster and more frequent trains

What's new in the Wairarapa?

  • In October and November we're continuing trenching to install ducting that will carry cables alongside the railway tracks on the Wairarapa Line. These cables will deliver power to a new signalling system that allows for more trains to be on the line at one time, and is therefore key to getting faster and more frequent services up and running. We're currently working our way north, starting from Masterton's Ngaumutawa Road level crossing.
  • We've started work on the level crossing upgrade at Woodside Road in Greytown and Cornwall Street in Masterton. Hillcrest Road follows in October, and Ngaumutawa Road and Renall Street commence early 2025. Each crossing takes around six weeks to complete. There will be single lane closures, and sometimes full road closures while we complete the upgrades. Road closures make it possible for us to get the work done quickly and safely.
  • Last month we worked with the Masterton Lions to deliver 370 information flyers to residents living in the areas where we will be working. We're keen to keep people well informed and will continue to drop flyers into letterboxes as we make our way along the line.
