KiwiRail is seeking the community’s views on which of the Fox or Bell Street level crossings in Featherston should get an upgrade, and which should close. Consultation opens today and people have until 15 May to have their say.
Changes for Fox and Bell Street are part of KiwiRail’s plan to improve level crossing safety across the Wairarapa, which includes closure of five of the 30 level crossings between Featherston and Masterton.
In Featherston Brandon Street will also close, with both Fitzherbert Street and Revans Street getting a full upgrade including flashing warning lights, bells and barrier arms, along with dedicated space and safety barriers for pedestrians.
KiwiRail Programme Director Andy Lyon says it’s all about safety.
“We’re excited to be working with Greater Wellington Regional Council to introduce faster, and more frequent train services to the Wairarapa. We’re doing the level crossing upgrade and line work now so that we can be ready for 2029 when new hybrid trains come into service.
“We know that will make commuting easier for the people traveling backwards and forwards across the region, but faster more frequent trains also significantly ups the risk at level crossings.
“Currently there are 30 public level crossings on the 31km stretch of line, and that’s pretty high as the line becomes a semi-urban connection.”
Andy Lyon says decisions about which crossings to upgrade and which to close are based on a range of factors, including what alternative access there is nearby, the impact it might have on traffic flow, community amenity and especially safety.
“Our original proposal was to close the Fox Street level crossing and upgrade Bell Street because it was in keeping with the direction set in the Featherston Masterplan.
“From our point of view, either option meets the necessary safety requirements and we’re happy to be guided by what the community would like to see,” Andy Lyon says.
