Double tracking

After two years of work, the new second track between Trentham and Upper Hutt stations opened to trains on 15 November 2021.

Trains now travel in both directions at once which supports a more efficient Wairarapa line service and reduces delays on this busy section of line. In time, it will allow for more frequent trains. Improvements were also made to Trentham and Wallaceville Stations and the Ward Street and Blenheim Street level crossings.

 

What the work involved

Over the two years, we:

  • Built 2.7km of new track and a new overhead power system for trains
  • Upgraded Ward Street and Blenheim Street level crossings
  • Built new platform shelters at Wallaceville and Trentham stations
